Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are figures, numbers, percentages, and calculations that you can use to measure your organization's current standing or progress over a period of time. They're traditionally used to indicate the effectiveness of your organization when compared to your goals and industry benchmarks.
With KIT's built-in KPI tool, you can create a custom KPI dashboard, set benchmarks to see where your metrics lie in relation to industry standards, as well as track your success and areas that might need your attention. KIT's KPI tool will be your go-to tool for making strategic and data-driven decisions.
KPI Dashboard
When navigating to KITs KPIs Tool on the left sidebar, your KPI dashboard will appear. Your KPI Dashboard will show you a summary of each KPI you have chosen to track. This way you can see your current measure and change over time, as well as your goal and benchmark for this measure.
Adding KPIs
To add KPIs you will want to click the 'Add KPIs' button. This will either be in the middle of your dashboard, or the top right, depending on if you have KPIs added to your dashboard or not yet. When you click 'Add KPIs' a module will open with available KPIs that you can choose from. Each metric has a description to provide more insight into what the metric measures.
KIT has two KPI categories:
- 'Donors' KPIs are metrics related to your contact and donors base.
- 'Fundraising' KPIs are metrics related to transactions.
To add a KPI to your dashboard, simply select the KPI measure and it will highlight with a purple checkmark. Once you have selected the KPIs you want to track, click 'Save'.
Setting Goals & Benchmarks
Once you add KPIs to your dashboard, a summary of each KPI measure will display. It is important to add in your KPI goals and benchmarks.
Edit KPI Goals
To edit your goals, click the three-button icon in the top right of the KPI summary. Here you will have the option to 'Remove' or 'Edit Goal'. When you click 'Edit Goal' you will be prompted to enter your goal measure for this metric. You can change this goal anytime.
Note: A goal is not required, you can use KPIs just to track your current standing. However, we highly recommend brainstorming your organization's goals, so you have a better idea of what you're working towards.
Edit KPI Benchmarks
The purpose of KPI benchmarks is the ability to compare your organization's measures to industry standards. This way you can see where your KPI measures lie in relation to organizations similar to yours. Before choosing benchmarks, you will want to first make sure you have the benchmark information (cause area & revenue) filled out in your Organization Profile.
To choose the benchmarks you use in the KPI Dashboard, click on the 'Benchmark: KIT Smart Benchmark' button in the top right. You will have the option to choose one of five available benchmark types.
TIP: You can also update your KPI benchmark type in Personal Settings.
KPI Profiles
Your KPI Dashboard provides a summary of each KPI measure. For a more in-depth overview of each KPI, you can click on the 'More' button on the bottom right of each KPI summary. This will expand the KPI profile.
Each KPI Profile displays:
- Your current standing
- Last months standing
- The % of change the measure experienced
- The industry benchmark
- Data visualization of changes in the measure
- Infographics that explain what the measure is, why it matters, and how to use it.
Note: KPI measures will refresh every 24 hours.
Exporting KPIs
You can export your KPIs into a .CSV or .XLSX file by clicking on the export icon (small document icon) in the top right of your KPI dashboard. You can export up to 5 years of monthly KPI metric history.
